Genghis Khan 1962 Mongolia Stamps
When is a stamp more than just a stamp? Wilton Stamp Company is powered
in part by Audible. We listen to books throughout the day as we find
great stamps for your collections. This week's listen was "Genghis Khan
and the Making of the Modern World" by Jack Weatherford. In the final
30 minutes of this 14 plus hour listen, was a passage that made us take
notice. 1962 was the 800th anniversary of birth of the great Khan. A
stamp and monument were designed and produced by Mongolia.
One of the stamps featured his sulde, or, "spirit banner". Mongolia
was at the time a satellite state of the Soviet Union. The Soviets
feared a nationalist uprising and they thought the image on the stamp of
their ancient warrior king and his banner would fuel Mongol rebellion.
The official in charge of creating the stamp paid a heavy price, as you
can read about here in this excerpt from the book: Genghis Khan Excerpt
