La Florida First Day of Issue

 April 3, 2013 was the 500th anniversary of the landing at "la Florida" by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon.

 While serving as provincial Governor of Puerto Rico, de Leon took three ships and 200 men to explore a rumored island to the west.

When they landed in April at what is now St. Augustine, 

springtime flowers were abundant.

They called this land la Florida (the Flowers) 

or Pascua Florida (Easter Flowers).

It is believed he was searching for the mystical Fountian of Youth.

Wednesday April 3rd 2013, St. Augustine welcomed the public and dignitaries from the State of Florida for Anniversary celebrations.

 

  

Anniversary events included historic re-enactments of the landing.

 

 

 

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner, US Senator Bill Nelson, and representatives from the US Postal Service joined the festivities in America's Oldest City to unveil America's Newest Forever Postage Stamps.

 

America on the Move: Muscle Cars (Forever) First Day of Issue Ceremony

The latest installment in the America on the Move stamp series is the exciting Muscle Cars (Forever) issue.  The set was released by the USPS Friday, February 22, 2013 at Daytona International Speedway, two days before the 55th running of the Daytona 500.

 The stamps in the set feature five legendary American Muscle cars including the 1966 Pontiac GTO, the 1967 Shelby GT-500, 

the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, the 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, 

and the 1970 Chevelle SS.

Wilton Stamp Company is located only 90 miles from Daytona.  

Having never been to the races or to a First Day of Issue Ceremony, 

we jumped at the chance for both experiences.

 There were a dozen chairs set up in front of the stage.  Half of them were reserved.  

We were there early enough to get two of the six open seats!

Happy February, Post Super Bowl Edition

Well, that turned out to be 

a Super game after all!

When the lights

 

went out in New Orleans, 

 

 

the game seemed over, the 'Niners 

seeming hopeless in a deep deficit. 

 

When the lights returned, it was a 

different game, one that ended up

a true nail-biter.

Parcel Post Centenary

January 1, 1913 marked the introduction of domestic Parcel Post Service, and the release of the 1913 set of 12 Parcel Post Stamps.

 Prior to Parcel Post service, the maximum weight of a package shipped through the mail was 4 pounds.

Shipping through the Postal Service was much more affordable than using private delivery services, and national commerce boomed as a result of  lower freight expenses.

Parcel Post was introduced through the passage of the Parcel Post Bill of 1912, a win by rural business against the interests of powerful private shipping companies.
